10 Lactose Free Alternatives

As we are all aware, there are a number of people in this world with various dietary requirements.

With the food industry growing each year, people are more aware of these requirements whether this be for medical reasons or a lifestyle choice.

I myself am lactose intolerant which means by body doesn’t take kindly to dairy products containing lactose enzyme. This listicle intends to give those similar to me a variety of alternatives tried and tested by myself.

Many people confuse lactose intolerance with a milk allergy, while there is a similarity, they are separate requirements. A milk allergy sufferer will not be able to consume any milk-based product or product containing or contaminated with milk, if they do, it could be dangerous.

On the other hand, someone who is lactose intolerant can consume the products containing milk (which contains lactose) without any dangerous consequences, but their gut cannot digest it as easily as others. This explains the different products marked as “Lactose Free”. These products still contain milk as a main ingredient; however, they have had the lactose enzyme extracted from them to enable easier digestion.

My Top 10 alternatives:

1. Genius Chocolate Chip Muffins – these muffins are dairy and gluten free; I don’t often buy them as they are quite expensive, but they are such a treat!

2. Alpro Custard – This accompanies the chocolate chip muffins perfectly. There is no difference in taste or texture. This product is plant based and tastes amazing!

3. Tesco Gluten and Milk Free Chocolate Chip Cookies – these with a cup of tea are delicious.

4. Morrisons Gluten and milk free Angel Slices – I could easily eat a whole pack – let’s leave it there.

5. Arla Lactose Free Single Cream - a recent purchase of mine. With strawberry season approaching, I wanted to find a cream to accompany my favourite fruit. This exceeded all my expectations.

6. Arla Raspberry and Strawberry Lactose Free Yoghurts – quite expensive but well worth it.

7. Arla Lactose Free Semi-Skimmed Cow’s Milk – I have always been a milk lover, ironic I know, but this milk doesn’t taste any different to your normal cows’ milk.

8. Arla Lactose Free Mature Cheddar Cheese – What would life be without cheese?

9. Ben and Jerry’s Dairy Free Chocolate Chip and Cookie Dough Ice cream – this stuff is amazing, very expensive but worth it every now and then.

10. Arla Lactose Free Cream Cheese – perfect on toast or on a bagel.

Please note, some of these products are not suitable for milk allergy suffers or vegans.
