On Monday 25th of February we were given the task of producing a front page of a newspaper (broadsheet styled) covering the Colchester and surrounding area. Within this task we were able to choose the type of content we included such as local, national and international.
We began assigning the roles to those who would work best by playing to people's strengths and came up with a plan for the overall design.
Collectively we decided to call our newspaper 'The News Angle'. Ruth came up with the overall design of the page which involved the spacing of pictures and stories.
We decided on a number of stories to report on and include on the front page. Some were accompanied by pictures and others weren't:
Tooth fairy
Colchester reptile
Jewish society
Oscar
Colchester crime
Easter egg hunt
Our team took on the roles of gathering different stories and emailing them to myself along with other members of the editing team to be proof read for print.
Chris went out and interviewed people at the university to gain primary sources regarding our 'Tooth fairy story', this was then sent to Jamie Paige to be edited and then sent for print.
After meeting our deadline we produced a full newspaper front page covering different hard and soft news stories with eye-catching headlines. We managed to include pictures for a lot of the stories which made our front page more aesthetically pleasing.
Overall, this task was a great way to experience working towards a tight deadline with different roles being carried out by peers. It also gave me a chance to see exactly what roles were encompassed in the thinking behind the making of a newspaper.
