For this reflective task I will be looking at the way BBC Three and Manchester Evening News have published a hard-hitting story of a man who was subject to horrific domestic abuse for a painful 6 years.

Both articles were very similar in terms of content and facts, however, Manchester Evening News provided readers with more background context regarding Alex Skeel and his partner Jordon Worth. BBC Three included some background, but without much detail. In my opinion, this made the story lack depth. For example, Manchester Evening News told readers about Skeel’s children and his reasons for staying in the relationship.

Both articles encompassed details of Skeel’s wounds such as his burns and broken teeth – both articles included a picture from an x-ray taken at the hospital which I thought was a good way to give readers a realistic idea of what happened without being too graphic. In addition, BBC Three included statistics regarding domestic abuse which is, again, very powerful.

BBC published their article in a very clever way, with Skeel telling the story first hand I think this is a very powerful way of homing in on all the different emotions involved and how common domestic abuse is.
