Ravenswood's reading success

Updated: May 16, 2019

Ravenswood’s reception class were awarded with a WH Smith voucher for reading every night at home for the last 12 weeks.

This reading scheme came about after teachers visited Sydney Australia last year and met with researchers. One project they decided to bring home was designed to promote the reading ability in young children.

The children were set the challenge of reading every night of this term and as a reward they were able to go with their parents to WH Smith and pick a book of their choice.

Mrs K Mills, Ravenswood Headteacher stressed the importance of children’s vocabulary, stating that: “If children were to read for one minute a day, they will pick up 8,000 words a year, and if you read for 20 minutes a day, they pick up 1.8 million words a year.”

Deputy Head, and teacher, Alison Knox-Johnston said: “The kids have been so excited, it’s been absolutely lovely. To be out of school with their parents and come to WH Smith’s is a huge in

centive for them.”

Ravenswood are continuing to see improvements in their students reading, even after such a short time.
