A Tearful Teressa May steps down as Prime Minister

Friday 24th May, Teressa May confirmed she will step down from her role as Prime Minister.


Teressa May has told the public that she will be resigning from her position of Leader of the Conservative party and Prime Minister on the 7th of June 2019.


May states whilst fighting back the tears, that she has: "done my best" to deliver a Brexit deal that would "work for everyone".


Stating that she had: "Done everything" she could in order to gain support from MP's with regards to her Brexit withdrawal agreement, however feels it is in the "best interest" of the country for a new Prime Minister to be elected and take over.


May continues in saying: "Our politics may be under strain but there is so much that is good about this country."


"So much to be proud of, so much to be optimistic about."


Mrs May struggled to hide her emotion during her speech stating that her role as the Prime Minster has been "the honour of my life" to serve as "the second female prime minister, but certainly not the last."


Various MP's have published statements voicing their views.


Jeremy Hunt tweeted: "I want to pay tribute to the PM today. Delivering Brexit was always going to be a huge task, but one she met every day with courage & resolve. NHS will have an extra £20bn thanks to her support, and she leaves the country safer and more secure. A true public servant."


Andrea Leadsom, recently resigned MP stated: "A very dignified speech. An illustration of her total commitment to country and duty. She did her utmost, and I wish her all the very best."


Mrs May confirmed she will continue to serve as Prime Minister while the Conservative leadership contest takes place over the summer.


May is set to step down as Tory leader on 7 June and a leadership contest is due to begin the following week.
