The New Online Highstreet

Updated: Sep 13, 2019

With the increase in online sales over the past few years, highstreet shops are suffering as a result. Could this be the end high street shops as we know it?

Online shopping has taken over leading to a significant decline in sales figures and potential closures for some retailers.

What is so appealing about online shopping?

Research suggests that main the reason people take to the internet to spend money is the sheer convenience in doing it from home. There is no hassle in roaming round the shops and queuing for hours on end.

The main advantage to online shopping is also the 'buy now and pay later' option which is available for customers to take advantage of. The newest on the online market scene is 'Pay with Klarna' giving people 28 days to make payments.

For many, this has caused uproar. Not only for retailers, but for customers who rely on the shopping experience itself and don't have access to the internet.

Marks and Spencers have recently shut a number of stores around the UK resulting in customers travelling further to their nearest store, or reverting to the internet.

For a selection of M&S's customer base, ordering food or clothes online isn't possible.

This isn't the only closure we have seen; namely 'Toys R Us' and 'Debenhams' leaving many people unemployed as a result.

Is this the direction all retailers are heading?
