Tougher labeling needed on food packaging

Headlines regarding the tragic death of 15-year-old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse in 2016 after an allergic reaction to a Pret baguette were covered by the BBC News and Sky news, demonstrating that stronger food labelling laws are being proposed to prevent future deaths involving allergies.

The BBC gave a straightforward publication, publishing the facts of the story while including quotes from different people involved in the situation. For example, Michael Gove and Allergy UK chief executive Carla Jones. It doesn’t indicate whether the quotes were primary sources as a reader I can assume they’re secondary sources. Although this publication factual information, it didn’t suggest that the BBC pushed the story on as much as rival news reporters had.

Sky news included a video interview of Natasha’s parents depicting information regarding their daughter’s allergies and suggesting that the only justice wanted was change, and that the bare minimum is “just not good enough”. This video was a very powerful addition to the news report as it was a primary source of information which gave the report more authenticity. Further on in the publication Sky spoke to Mr. Gove himself, Environmental Secretary. This publication as a whole shows that Sky news pushed the story further on as they arranged interviews with Natasha’s parents and Michael Gove rather than taking information from other news sources.
