UK NHS guidelines say it's ok to take contraceptive pill without a break

Controversial headlines on NHS guidance regarding taking the contraceptive pill for 28 days without a break were covered by various websites. Looking at BBC news and comparing it to the Independent and Her (women’s health), the coverage is similar but its presentation to readers varies.

BBC news took an official stance, delivering the information similar to the NHS website’s publications. For many, it’s beneficial to who readers have limited knowledge regarding the contraceptive pill. The BBC’s subtitles; ‘What is the pill?’ and ‘Is the pill safe?’ enables understanding while answering questions.

The first section of BBC News and the Independent, includes information from Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare - a good starting point as it immediately shows research has been done (primary or secondary), and the article is trustworthy, including quotes from doctor’s opinions.

HER took an informal approach, effective and relatable for female readers, e.g. writing style and way of thinking compared to official factual news reports.

The Independent included a video depicting various women’s views on the contraceptive pill and the freedom it gave them. Dr. Williams’ looks at the pill and its ‘safety’. Following the video was an effective amount of writing retaining the readers interest.

I think the Independent had most effective coverage with the video and quotes, both from relatable women
