"Well, what the hell was that?"

Updated: May 27, 2021

12.8 million people sat down to watch the season six finale of BBC's Line of Duty, but were left disappointed as it didn't showcase the 'urgent exit required' ending they had hoped for. Emily Bickers reports.

BBC sensation Line of Duty had the nation on the edge of their seats for the finale of season Six in preparation for the infamous 'H' to be revealed.

Many viewers have been committed to the show and its complicated storyline since it first aired on BBC Two back in 2012, but since watching the finale, wished they hadn't bothered.

Rachel Welham said: "I can't believe they did us dirty like that, what a naff ending. I don't really know what I expected, but I definitely wasn't that."

She said: "They could have picked anyone other than that idiot to be 'H', what were they thinking?"

Welham said: "I really hope there is another series because I think the majority of us need proper closure."

*Spoiler alert*

As Sunday revealed, DI Ian Buckells 'the fourth man' was finally brought to justice for his OCG connections. Although some were left disappointed it seems producer Jed Mercurio opted for the more subtle approach in conveying the issue of how corruption is often mistaken for incompetence.

Viewers took to social media to voice their opinions on the final episode with some stating how they'd: "Waited 10 years for this disappointment" and pleading for a "Better ending".

Martain Compston, AC-12's Steven Arnott responded to the feedback stating his "immense pride" and gratitude for the continued support from viewers.

He tweeted: "Just want to thank everybody who reached out about last night and the series as a whole, we've truly been blown away by the reaction and love for the show, we're proud of it."

But the question on everyone's lips is will there be a seventh series?

Producer Jed Mercurio told Radio Times in March that he hasn't ruled out the potential for a seventh series but "would hope there could be". However, with the pandemic here for the foreseeable future, we might be waiting a while.

So, will LOD fans give their all-time-favourite AC-12 trio another chance, or has Jed really cooked his goose?
